
CONTRACEPTION
Contraception – birth control – is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman becoming pregnant; mechanisms which are intended to reduce the probability of the fertilization of an ovum by a spermatozoon. Methods and intentions typically termed contraception may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family planning.
BARRIER METHODS place a physical impediment to the movement of sperm into the female reproductive tract.
HORMONAL METHODS – combinations of synthetic estrogen and progestins (synthetic forms of progesterone). These include the combined oral contraceptive pill ("The Pill"), the Patch, the contraceptive vaginal ring, and a monthly injection.
